River Cottage HQ

On this project James was working as a subcontractor for Magenta Building Repair. It was his role to lead a team of carpenters to carry out the restoration of a large barn which had been converted in 2006 to be used for various functions but had been severely damaged due to a large fire in 2012.

They also carried out the conversion of an old cart shed into a toilet block and plant room to house a wood pellet fired heating system and a new timber framed building to be used as a cookery school, designed by Satellite Architects.

The structural timbers used were locally sourced Douglas Fir. The design was modern with the use of steel Flitch plates in the joints connected with steel bolts. The trusses were tied together using a steel tie rod system which is really useful when you have large spans across the building.

The new cookery school building was clad with Larch timbers, glass and corrugated metal sheets giving it a contemporary agricultural look.
